A week or so ago when I was looking at all my old buttons, I was reminded that I once had the urge to start collecting vintage sewing items. I had been given a few, mainly by my mother, over the years and thought it would be good to add a few more pieces to make them into a real collection. So I started browsing in antique and second-hand shops in anticipation of picking up lots of little treasures. I quickly had my hopes dashed. The prices were prohibitive and I sadly shelved the idea of adding to my collection.
I still use the little silver thimble which once belonged to my grandmother, and no matter how carefully I position it on my finger, the needle will always find that little hole. I also use the tailor's awl with the ivory handle which is very useful for getting into tight corners with its deadly point.
I should resume my search as perhaps they are no longer so collectable. I first started looking in the days before ebay and who knows what that might reveal. In the meantime, I am happy to have these few pieces which I treasure, especially as I know some of them have been in the family for over 100 years.

I'll keep a look out for you too! I have some bits and pieces as well - I just love to think about who has used them and how special it is to own something so old!I am sure the young ones won't have anything old in their old age - throw away seems to be the norm.
